How do I delete a payment I entered by mistake?

Nothing you record is permanent. A payment logged twice, typed with the wrong amount, or added by an accidental tap on Quick Pay can be removed in a few seconds, and the plan repairs itself.

Deleting it

  1. Open the debt from your Account List to reach its Debt Details page.
  2. Open the Transactions tab. This is the list of every payment and charge on that account.
  3. Find the row, verify the date and amount, and delete it by clicking on the trash can icon. You might have to scroll to the right to see the icon.

The balance goes back to what it was before that payment, the transaction disappears from the history, and the snowball table and dashboard recalculate right away. There is no waiting for an overnight job.

If the amount was wrong, edit instead

If the payment happened but you typed the wrong figure, edit that row and correct the amount rather than deleting and re-entering. Editing keeps the original date and the billing month it was applied to, which matters when the payment sits near the end of a month.

Common causes

  • Quick Pay or Mark paid tapped by accident. Both record the planned amount immediately. Delete the row and the account goes back to unpaid for the month.
  • The same payment entered twice. Two rows with the same date and amount. Delete one.
  • A payment imported from your bank or YNAB and also entered by hand. Delete the one you typed and keep the imported row, so future imports stay matched.
  • Applied to the wrong debt. Delete it from the wrong account and record it on the right one.
  • Applied to the wrong month. See What exactly does billing month refer to?; editing the row lets you move it.

What deleting does not touch

Removing a payment does not undo a real payment at your lender; it only changes what Undebt.it knows. It also leaves your budget, payoff method and other accounts alone. If a month looks wrong after several corrections, compare the account balance here against your statement and edit the balance directly on the Debt Details page to set things straight.
